Juan de Valdes (d.1541) and Don Benedetto (d.1545) were Reformers who penned what are probably the two most significant works of the Italian Reformation: One Hundred and Ten Considerations and On the Benefit of Jesus Christ, Crucified. Both writers protested not merely against the corruption of the Roman Catholic Church, as Martin Luther did, but went further to challenge the Italian humanism of the Renaissance. Juan de Valdes communicates the struggle and debate regarding how justification by faith is lived out. The writing of Don Benedetto includes central themes about Christ's death, and the roles that assuance and joy play in the Christian life. Through both of these outstanding Christian thinkers, we learn the ultimate price paid and the benefits we receive Because of Christ.

He came to North America from England in 1968 to lead Regent College in Vancouver, Canada, an international graduate school of Christian studies. Today he is a Regent Board of Governors' Professor in Spiritual Theology. He earned an M.A. in Edinburgh, and an M.A. BSc, and D. Phil. from Oxford.
