"The Spiritual Life" is a republication of two books previously published separately as "Soul-Depths & Soul-Heights" and "Lights and Shadows of Spiritual Life". Octavius Winslow, who ministrered during the 19th century in England, has seldom been equalled as a writer on the devotional aspects of Christianity. His works are marked by a profound grasp of theology combined with heart-searching application. In this he follows in the line of the Puritans and yet his style is more accessible to the modern reader.
Winslow sums up his approach in the Preface to "The Atonement" when he states: "The religion of the Lord Jesus is valuable only as its power is experienced in the heart... The man of mere taste may applaud its external beauty - the philosopher may admire its ethics, the orator its eloquence, and the poet its sublimity, but if the Spirit of God take not his own truth, and impress it upon the heart, as to the great design of its revelation, it avails nothing."
