Why is Communion Important?

The Bible and other scriptures tell us the importance of holding communion, including the reason why and how it benefits us spiritually. While there are many different understandings and interpretations of communion, the principle message of the service is taught to us in various verses through the Bible.

The significance of communion is told to us in Matthew 6:26-28. During the last supper, where Jesus was with his twelve disciples, Jesus took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and passed it to his disciples, saying "Take and eat; this is my body." Next, he took a cup and gave thanks, then passed the cup to his disciples, saying "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured for many for the forgiveness of sins."

The Bible tells us that Christians partake in Holy Communion in remembrance of the body and blood of Jesus, that was broken and poured at the cross. This reminds us of Jesus's suffering and love for us. Partaking of communion, we proclaim the eternal life that was gifted to us when Jesus sacrificed his life.

John 6:54-56 tells us that whoever ate his body and drunk his blood abides in Jesus, and he will do so with us too. Some scriptures teach us that through communion, we connect with Jesus in the spiritual life that he gives to us, as well as in the memory of his death. We are also taught that in the experience of communion, Christ can meet and strengthen his people.
