Andrew Murray was born in Graaff-Reinet South Africa in May 1828, a son of a Reformed minister sent from Scotland.
From an early age Andrew Murray had a desire to follow in his fathers footsteps and be a minister. Although at that time he saw it more as a profession than a calling from God. However following his studies in the Aberdeen, and subsequent theological studies in the Netherlands Murray gave his life to Christ. He is quoted in a letter to his parents as saying 'Your son has been born again. … I have cast myself on Christ.'
Murray later returned to South Africa, with a brief spell in England. He married Emma Rutherford in July 1856 they had eight children together before his death in January 1917. It is estimated that during his lifetime Murray wrote over 240 books and tracts, some of the most famous being, 'Abide in Christ', 'With Christ in the School of Prayer', and 'The Ministry of Intercession' One of the co-founders of the South African General Mission.
Murray became popular with both Pentecostal believers for his beliefs including the continuation of apostolic gifts, while his belief in the authority of the Bible and adherence to Scripture made him well liked among those of a more Reformed background.
